‘Australia day’ for Federici not enough to help Royals reign

READING fans waved Australian flags to show their support for Aussie keeper Adam Federici but it wasn't enough to stop the Royals losing their Championship match 1-0 to Birmingham.

The 30-year-old was inconsolable last weekend after letting in an extra-time goal in the 2-1 FA Cup semi-final loss to Arsenal.

He tweeted: "Just like to say thank you for all your messages and how sorry I am for my mistake.

It's part of being a goalkeeper and I'm sure it will make me stronger."

Reading's manager, team-mates and fans, not to mention the local newspaper, refused to blame Federici for the loss, saying it was his outstanding efforts in goal this season that got the team into the semi-finals.

In an interesting twist, it emerged in the days after the Arsenal match that he was due to marry long-time girlfriend Micaela Gardner in Italy on the day of the FA Cup final.
