Aussies narrowly miss rowing podium

AUSTRALIA has narrowly missed a medal in a thrilling finish to the lightweight men's four rowing contest in London.

Denmark set a scorching pace early and Australia was poised in second entering the final 500 metres.

But the crew of Anthony Edwards, Samuel Beltz, Ben Cureton and Todd Skipworth was unable to match the finishing burst of South Africa (gold) and Great Britain (silver).

Only 1.2 seconds separated the first four across the line.

South Africa's victory by about a foot denied Britain a third gold medal of the Games and a win for brothers Peter and Richard Chambers from Northern Ireland.
