Antibiotic-resistant golden staph spreading

An antibiotic-resistant strain of golden staph has emerged as the nation's most rampant superbug, with the country's healthcare safety watchdog warning more people are now contracting the infection from others in the community than in hospital.

A new report from the Australia Commission of Safety and Quality in Health Care, released today, will show the strain, known as the "Queensland clone", is now responsible for 31 per cent of all antibiotic-resistant golden staph infections nationwide, The Courier Mail reports.

It comes as experts warn the world risks being thrown back into a pre-antibiotic era unless urgent action is taken to reduce the rates of superbugs, and as Australia's antibiotic prescribing rates continue to be "way, way too high".

The report said the reason for the superbug's rapid spread and dominance remained unclear.
