3.3 magnitude earthquake strikes off Fraser Island

A SMALL earthquake struck about 100km off the coast of Fraser Island on Monday.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 3.3, struck at 5.18am at a depth of 10km.

It follows two stronger earthquakes in about the same location, one of which hit on Saturday at 1.38pm about 133km off the coast of Rainbow Beach with a magnitude of 5.7.

The other, measuring 5.2, shook the region on Thursday.

The 5.3 magnitude quake was felt from Bundaberg down to the Gold Coast and inland to Toowoomba.

Buildings shuddered, crockery rattled and small cracks reportedly appeared in buildings as the earth shook.

Some homeowners reported seeing small waves on the surface of their backyard swimming pools.

The quake's epicentre was about 150km east of Fraser Island and 30km below ground.

Experts said it was not uncommon for aftershocks to be felt as strongly as the original tremor.

This mornings earth tremor recorded in Clayton's Nambour Head Office, turn the sound up, watch the plants/computers. Whole building was swaying, sure had us all wondering what was going on for a minute there.
