Asylum seeker dead and 77 injured on Manus

ONE asylum seeker is dead, 77 are injured and some are still missing after the second "incident" in two days at the Manus Island detention centre overnight.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison fronted media in Darwin on Tuesday to provide some details of what happened in the offshore detention centre on Monday night.

The serious incident included a violent break-out of asylum seekers from the centre, including one person critically injured with a skull fracture.

Mr Morrison also confirmed one person was shot in the buttock outside the centre, while another died during what may have been a riot.

He said it was still unclear how the death happened, describing it as a tragedy, while it is understood it was prompted by rolling protests from asylum seekers held in the centre which first began on Sunday.

Despite the latest protests, Mr Morrison said the government remained clear in its resolve to continue holding asylum seekers in offshore detention centres.
