And the winner is...

Lisa Mitchell (pictured) has won the very prestigious Australian Music Prize, The Amp 2009, for her album Wonder.

Prize director Scott Murphy said, “From over 200 entries and more specifically, a brilliant shortlist of nine, The Amp’s panel of judges has decided that the best Australian album released in 2009 is Wonder. The Australian Music Prize was established to reward Australian music of excellence, and the judges’ choice of winner this year certainly reflects that criteria.”

Wonder has received a lot of critical acclaim since its release. For a start, it has gone gold in Australia.

The Amp is not just all about kudos and recognition – Lisa won $30,000 in prize money. That’s a lot of guitar strings. Unfortunately Lisa was not at the award ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. She’s currently performing overseas.

In addition to the $30,000 cash prize, Lisa Mitchell also receives a $30,000 advertising package, courtesy of The Amp’s principal partner Channel V. Both Channel V and MAX will also screen a special on Lisa.

The Amp is heading into its sixth prize next year and will open again for entries in October. For more info visit www.australianmusicprize.com.au. The award is open to Australian artists across all genres who release original album-length works during 2010.
