Ancient diet finds favour with today's healthy food lovers

THE eating habits of an ancient civilization are finding favour amongst a new generation of healthy food lovers.

The paleo (short for Palaeolithic) diet is based upon using everyday, modern foods to mimic the food groups of pre-agriculture, hunter-gatherer man.

It's a food trend winning fans amongst bloggers and celebrities, as well as everyday folk like mother-of-five Jen Shaw.

Mrs Shaw adopted the paleo lifestyle after researching nutrition online.

Her husband was training as a boxer and was looking for meals that would nourish his body.

"I was looking for nutrition to help him perform at his best," she said.

"He also had to drop weight sometimes, but I wanted it to be healthy.

"I have five kids as well so I was looking for ways to improve their behaviour."

Mrs Shaw tested out the paleo principles on herself first before slowly changing the diet of the rest of her family.

Process foods were eliminated, as were grains, most dairy products and refined sugar.

Their daily food intake became a mix of meat, vegetable products, a little fruit, seeds and oils from coconuts and avocadoes.

"I found that I not only felt healthier, but I was actually happier in life too," she said.

"My mind felt clearer. I was amazed at how much of our lives are linked to food."

Mrs Shaw was so inspired by the changes in her life that she shared her recipes on Facebook.

She was soon fielding questions from friends and family members keen to learn more.

"There is a revolution of good food with everyday people like mums at the moment, especially on Facebook," she said.

Out of that interest, Jen's Paleo Kitchen was born.

Mrs Shaw cooks up commercial quantities of paleo granola and ships it around Australia.

She also has a range of pre-made meals that she delivers to customers in Toowoomba.

"I've found people are busy but they want to lose weight and be healthy," she said.

"This is my way of helping them out so they don't have to eat poor quality, weight-loss meals or visit the drive-through."

Mrs Shaw's dream is to eventually expand the business and operate a one-stop paleo shop with a cafe, children's education centre and gym.
