Alex Head woman, 53, dies after being pulled from surf

A 53-YEAR-OLD woman who was rescued by an off-duty lifesaver at Maroochydore has died in hospital overnight.

Police this morning confirmed the Alexandra Headland woman had not survived, despite being revived on the beach.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast regional manager Aaron Purchase said beachgoers had seen the woman enter an unpatrolled stretch of water alone between Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore on Sunday afternoon.

"Other people who were nearby lost sight of her," Mr Purchase said.

He said one of the people walking along the beach that afternoon was an Alexandra Headland surf lifesaving volunteer.

She helped others pull the unconscious woman from the water before beginning to resuscitate her while a bystander called 000 shortly before 5.30pm.

Paramedics arrived to take the woman to Nambour General Hospital in a serious condition.

Mr Purchase was saddened to learn the woman had passed away.
