TWO new aqua parks have gained council approval to run six-month trials at Airlie Beach.

One will be located on the south-west edge of the Airlie lagoon rock wall, near the Broadwater car park, and the other will be located at Beacons Beach on the northern side of the stinger enclosure.

Jason Ford, the owner of Airlie Aqua Park, which will be at Beacons Beach, said he hoped to open within a few months.

"It would have its own stinger enclosure around it, so it will operate 12 months a year, seven days a week," Mr Ford said.

With plans to employ 10-15 staff, including lifeguards, he said the park would be "a huge boost for the town, especially for kids".

Sessions will be sold in one-hour allotments, but with the stinger enclosure right next to it Mr Ford said families could enjoy a full day at the beach.

A business representative of the Airlie/Whitsunday Water Park was contacted yesterday but was unable to comment.

Whitsunday Mayor Jenny Whitney said the parks would be exciting new mainland attractions for tourists and residents.

"Similar aqua parks have proven very popular on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast as a fun-filled attraction for locals and backpackers," Cr Whitney said.

"The aqua parks can be assembled in one hour and disassembled in approximately 1.5 hours; it is proposed the park will be removed from the water in bad weather."
