Aboriginal women kept as 'cash cows', says former MP

ABORIGINAL woman are being "kept pregnant and producing children for the cash" a former Labor MP has claimed.

Former MP Gary Johns made the controversial claim on Channel Ten's Bolt Report on Sunday morning.

"A lot of poor women in this country, a large proportion of whom are Aboriginal, are used as cash cows," he said.

"They are kept pregnant and producing children for the cash.

"Now, that has to stop."

Mr Johns, who has distanced himself from the Labor Party since losing his north Brisbane seat in 1996, made the comments in conversation about indigenous recognition in the constitution on NAIDOC Week's final day.

The former Keating gov-ernment MP is no stranger to making controversial comments about welfare benefits and pregnancy.

In December last year, Mr Johns argued in The Australian newspaper welfare should be stopped for recipients who were not using contraceptives.

Mr Johns said there should be no government incentive for people to have children.
