Abbott welcomes election date, says Coalition is ready

TONY Abbott said the 2013 Federal Election would be about trust, as part of a pitch to voters along similar lines to former Prime Minister John Howard's 2004 election pitch.

Mr Abbott welcomed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's announcement of a September 14 election date, saying the Coalition was ready.

He said the election would be about trust, citing Ms Gillard's turnaround on the carbon tax among other issues.

His comments had an eerie similarity to statements Mr Howard made before he won his final term at Prime Minister.

"This election, ladies and gentlemen, will be about trust," Mr Howard told reporters in August 2004.

Mr Abbott said the conservative parties had already released its "real solutions" plan, and despite the document being light on policy details, he again emphasised his commitment to scrap the carbon and mining taxes.

"We are so ready, we have already released our real solutions plan," he said.

"The choice for the Australian people could not be clearer - it's more tax or less; it's more regulation or less; it's more freedom or less."

In further evidence Mr Abbott has moved to dispel Labor's "Coalition negativity" campaign in the Parliament, he kept to a tight script of "real solutions" and "positive plans for the future".

He said the only real announcement in Ms Gillard's speech, other than the election date, was more taxes and higher taxes for Australians.

Mr Abbott refused to take questions on his election pitch, leaving further answers on Coalition promises for after his planned speech to the National Press Club on Wednesday.

Leader of the Nationals, Warren Truss, also emphasised the Coalition's plans for a "fair share of federal funding" for regional Australia.

"For more than five years now, regional Australia has been treated as the ignored poor cousin of the capital cities," he said.

Mr Truss said billions of dollars have been stripped from regional programs, despite large programs such as that established under the Regional Development Australia grants system.

Do you think Julia Gillard made the right move in revealing the election date?
