Dads and kids connect
For stay-at-home dad Jeremy Richardson the free Dads & Kids Playgroup in Lismore has been a godsend.
He said the group gives him the chance to get out of the house for a couple of hours every Monday, his children get to meet new playmates and he gets the opportunity to connect with other dads who have young children.
The group is run by the Men & Family Centre and the hall is fully set up with a cupboard full of craft supplies, games, playground equipment, bikes, a sandpit, musical instruments and plenty of indoor play space for rainy days.
However, right now Jeremy and fellow dad Dave Basnett are the only two fathers taking part in the Dads & Kids Playgroup and they are keen to see new faces.
“It’s such a good facility here and a really positive environment for dads and their kids,” Jeremy said. “We have craft, music, storytelling, playground equipment… plenty of coffee.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than being an active and engaged father and this is a great place where blokes can feel comfortable playing with their kids and talking about their parenting experiences with other fathers. My kids and I have both met new people – it’s been awesome.”
Jeremy said it was a very casual and informal atmosphere.
“It’s just good to have other blokes to talk to and it’s a great social experience for the kids,” Jeremy said. “It can be hard to meet dads in a similar situation… most of the time we’re at home with the kids! In many ways, it’s good respite from the normal routine.”
Jeremy and Dave have been playing lots of music with their children on the instruments supplied and are even thinking of putting a track together!
The Dads & Kids Playgroup meets every Monday from 10am to 12pm at 41 Wilson Street, South Lismore (the old scout hall next to Possums Day Care). The group is free and anyone is welcome. For more information, phone the Men & Family Centre on 6622 6116.
