A passion for fashion

If you have a passion for fashion, then the Lismore Fashion Society may provide you with the fashion inspiration you have been looking for. The newly formed society is the brainchild of Lisa Marie Cheal, an illustrator with a deep-seated love for fashion who began feeling fashion-deprived when she moved to Lismore a couple of years ago. She wanted to establish a network of people who could get together, be creative and come up with new and inspiring ideas to bring the Lismore fashion scene alive.

“I put a poster in a shop window about starting the society and was inundated with people who were interested,” Lisa Marie said. “There are so many young students and people who are isolated in the community who love fashion but don’t know how to get involved. People have heard about the community-based Nimbin fashion show and I’m hoping we can establish a similar sort of culture here in Lismore.”

Lisa Marie said she hopes the society will provide a platform for young people to meet designers, textiles creators and retailers.

“We have so many ideas and need people with diverse skills to get involved who can perhaps mentor younger people who have an interest. One of the ideas we have is to put on fashion shows in Lismore,” Lisa Marie said. “To put on a fashion parade you need more than just fashion designers. You need lighting, production, set displays, hair and costumes. It will give lots of young people an outlet to dress up and put on glitzy outfits throughout the year.”

Lisa Marie invites everyone who has a love of fashion to get involved – from vintage fashion collectors to fashion history buffs and fashion school graduates. There are even plans to put together a fashion newsletter.

The Lismore Fashion Society plans to meet monthly, with the first meeting at the Italo Club on Saturday, May 29, at 2pm. Everyone with a passion for fashion is invited and there will goodie bags and afternoon tea provided. Along with other fashion notables, local fashion designer Mia Brennan will be there to discuss showcasing local fashions, so bring along your designs, illustrations or ideas to share and showcase during the meeting.
