Having had the great pleasure of coming home for a few days to see the resounding success that was the Melbourne Heart v West Sydney Wanderers match, a quick note of congratulations to everyone involved as well as the local community.
After years of talking about what you can achieve and of the spirit, competence and passion of our local football community, you positively shone at the first chance. Both Heart, in particular, as well as the Wanderers players and staff were full of praise for the hospitality, facilities, accommodation and friendliness of the local community.
To see thousands of kids at Oakes Oval watching the game in a capacity crowd was fantastic and, once again, I reiterate that if we correctly nurture our local talent, of which John Aloisi spoke glowingly, we can give our kids a chance to play at the very top of world football.
A special mention for the Lismore Council and Jenny Dowell for their support, as well as general manager of FFNC, Steve Mackney, who is a marvellous asset to the local game.
None other than Heart Director of Football, John Didulica, rates Steve as one of the most diligent, passionate and capable administrators he has worked with, and that is very high praise indeed.
The whole week was a credit to the local community and to local football, and will be the start of many such initiatives in years to come.
Well done to everyone involved. You did yourselves and your beautiful area proud.
