Scene Briefs

With their sweet harmonies, catchy original songs and distinctive arrangements of classic covers, Monkey & the Fish will play the Billinudgel Hotel this Sunday, February 7, from 3-7pm.

Two master guitarists, Jim Kelly and Kirk Lorange, join forces for a night of hot and cool guitar grooves (a bit like Ry Cooder or Little Feat) when the pair plays the Jazz-Bah at the Ballina Hotel this Saturday, February 6, from 6pm. You’ll hear Kirk weave his magic on the slide guitar (and he sings) and hear Jim rip it up with the mandocello.

Contemporary jazz guitarist Jim Kelly goes electric for an afternoon of jazz and blues grooves when the Jim Kelly Trio (Greg Lyon, Pete Wilkins) plays the Lennox Point Hotel this Sunday, February 7, from 4-7pm.

Pianist Steve Russell will combine with New Zealand flugelhorn player Murray Tanner for a night of their favourite jazz standards at the Bang Thai In Bangalow this Friday, February 5, from 7pm.

North Coast groove band The Ninth Chapter returns to The Rails this Sunday, February 7, promoting their debut long-player Zanthippe. Combining roots music with solid funk undertones the band has supported True Live and Dallas Frasca. The gig starts at 6.30pm.

The Northern Rivers Big Band will perform its first concert for the year at the Ballina RSL Club this Sunday, February 7. There’ll be 18 musicians, including two vocalists, Dean Doyle and Jim Fairfull. This is big band music in the style of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and that crew. The concert starts at 2pm; entry is $10.

Local trio Wordplay plays good ol’ rock ‘n roll. Like it’s supposed to be played. Mark Richards, Phil Brandolini and Matt Gaggin will whip up that rockin’ energy with a swag of covers from the last five decades of rock when they perform at the Richmond Hotel in Lismore this Friday, February 5, from 9pm.
