Raise your Glass
2005 De Bortoli Sero Shiraz Tempranillo
With DB’s mid range of blends – around $10.93, Station Hotel, Lismore – I was worried on two counts: I bought this 2005 several years later, though the label said it was good drinking ‘now’. And I thought I saw a brownish tinge around the rim of the full glass. The wine appears black and opaque, like the dark brick Australian dwellings used to be crazily built from. Heat, honey and black pepper in the perfume. Jam on the palate, with no aftertaste. It’s good with starters before a full meal.
2008 Jim Barry Silly Mid On Mt Lofty Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
Having praised Jim Barry’s Watervale reisling in this column, the name is now my mantra for good drinking. This cricket-based series is a lower price range: $16.95, Station Hotel, Lismore. Cricket was compromised for me by John Howard’s nationalistic promotion. I was mesmorised by Steve Waugh’s last match, when dementia was gaining on my mother. Errily, my father died at the time of Kieren Perkins’ Olympic-gold-medal-winning long swim. A bright, light gold in colour and pine-based perfume, the Clare Valley semillon contributes depth and structure, pre-empting the question of real savi or not.
