2008 Austins Six Foot Six Geelong Pinot Noir
At the Cellars (Ballina, Bangalow, Byron) for around $20, this pinot noir aimed for quality but affordability. So good on them for an admirable goal. It’s medium to deep red in colour (deeper than blood red) with an orange, pale brown rim. In aroma it is red currant moving to black current and on the palate there’s burnt orange, iron and blood, which might satisfy vampires said my drinking companion, but he had been trying, without success, to get through the current crop of vampire fiction, which, like the wine, is youngish, with not much depth.
2007 Gabbiano Delle Venezie Pinot Grigio
As I write my last wine review for The Northern Rivers Echo, this is perhaps a fitting drink to farewell with. To drink bliss is to drink this Italian pinot grigio. Some rep recommends and delivers a small cache of Italian wines to the fab Station Hotel which we’re lucky enough to have in Lismore. This one is only $9.95 from people who know and appreciate wine. Some wines you drink and think OMG! because you’re so grateful for the distinctiveness of aesthetic appeal. Gabbiano has a website at www.gabbiano.com/gabbiano/ .
