New coward punch attack has dire echoes of Daniel Christie

TWO days after Daniel Christie was farewelled by grieving friends and family, another senseless attack has left a young coward punch victim in the same hospital.

A 21-year-old was last night being treated at St Vincent's Hospital after he was knocked unconscious by a stranger in Sydney's CBD early Sunday.

Police were told the victim had been walking out of a hotel on Sussex St when he was punched in the face.

His attacker had not been found on Sunday night.

Hours earlier, the riot squad was called to break up a brawl in George St.

A number of people were arrested and were expected to be charged.

Police were also hunting a man in his 20s, who punched another man in the face at a Cockle Bay taxi rank.

Two other men, both aged 22 have been charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest following a confrontation with officers at World Square.

The arrests were made as part of weekend long police operation Simmer, which was targeting alcohol related violence in the Kings Cross district.

A funeral was held for Daniel Christie, who was attacked near the same street corner as Thomas Kelly, last Friday.

During the service his father Michael called on law makers to set new guidelines that would "stop this insanity in the name of all those had died a violent death of have been injured by these acts".

One punch legislation is expected to be introduced into NSW Parliament in early March.
