Gamers battle for survival with Resistance 3

RESISTANCE 3 is arguably the best title in Sony's FPS trilogy.

Following humanity's struggle to survive after the Chimera have taken over Earth, Resistance 3's story is a refreshing change from the military-centric plots of other shooters.

You play as Joe Capelli, and you are simply trying to survive and take care of your family (well, at least initially).

The atmosphere is great, with crumbling remains of the past always evident.

In addition, tape records and files help flesh out the game's story.

The gameplay itself is great; with miniature sandbox battlegrounds that encourage experimentation (like Halo).

The weapons are inventive and a riot to use, and the sensation of blasting the Chimera is very visceral indeed.

Insomniac games are among the best in this regard - with Joe's creative offense echoing the innovative insanity of the Ratchet & Clank titles (also made by Insomniac).

There is no regenerating health, so the game's challenge may take some younger gamers by surprise - but stick with it, as it's incredibly satisfying overcoming a seemingly impossible challenge.

In many aspects, the game can be quite the survival-horror, as the player is often alone - seemingly against the world.

Despite the game's quality, Resistance 3 didn't sell too well upon release - making this game a sleeper hit.

Still, if you can track down a copy (along with the two great prequels), you won't be disappointed. Also, there is split-screen co-op, which is rare these days.
