Doomsayers in doubt as Australia rated among most peaceful

DESPITE a higher terrorism threat, Australia has moved up the rankings and is among the top 10 most peaceful countries in the world.

A report on the Global Peace Index, released by Vision of Humanity, showed Australia had moved up four places to ninth in the overall rankings, and joined New Zealand and Japan in the top 10.

The study ranks 162 nations based on factors such as the level of violent crime, involvement in conflicts and the degree of militarisation.

The report said terrorism had affected many of the world's most peaceful countries, including France, Denmark and Australia.

It said the indicator for external conflicts had improved 3% across the world since last year.

For Australia, the report said it improved in this category because it scaled back involvement in conflicts including Afghanistan.

The report said the average country's peacefulness had deteriorated 2.4% in the past eight years.

Since 2014, 81 countries had become more peaceful while 78 deteriorated.

The United States' rose slightly from 101st to 94th, but scored badly in terms of militarisation, homicides and fear of violence.
