2006 Thomas George 2LM Charity Walk

A special thank you to all the walkers and your sponsors who participated in, and supported, the 2006 Thomas George 2LM Charity Walk. The day was very successful and has raised more than $24,000 for local organisations, including the North Coast Childrens Home (CASPA), Summerland Early Intervention, Wilson Park School and Jumbunna Early Intervention. Thank you again to those who helped make it such a success, which will now assist in providing needs for these special people.

Rehabilitation Unit

Last weeks rally for the Rehabilitation Unit demonstrated the strength of support in the medical and wider community for retaining the current service. I was pleased and thank Chris Crawford and the executive of St Vincents Hospital for finally getting together for a meeting which has been sought by the community. This is not about who wins, this is about two organisations working together to provide health services for the region that are needed. I trust the discussions will continue to provide the region with a suitable outcome. Already in a short time the community has worked together to collect more than 3000 signatures calling on the State Parliament to retain the existing service. The outcome local representatives and mayors have been trying to achieve in regard to this issue is of paramount importance. Finally, I appreciate and thank everyone for the support we have received so far in trying to achieve this aim. Further discussions will continue this week and I will keep you informed of any action or support which may be needed.

More police

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Superintendent Bruce Lyons, Lismore mayor Merv King, Ballina MP Don Page, Ballina Council general manager John Christopherson, and representatives from the Workforce & Planning division of NSW Police, who were here to carry out a review of the Richmond Local Area Command in relation to police numbers. We were able to highlight and reinforce the need for extra police for the whole of the Command. The community can be assured that I will continue to make representations to seek the extra police required.

Rosanna has designs on female taboo

Artist Rosanna Pimm uses 3500 porcelain tampons to created her large scale performance installation Riots of Passage in The Quad as part of The Lismore Women's Festival on International Women's Day. Laying down and de-constructing the mandala structure symbolises the impermanence of the menstrual cycle and an end to female inequality in the world.
