Flames burst into opener
The North Coast Flames flayed, hung and char-grilled East Brisbane 6-1 in the opening round of the the Womens Summer Soccer League at Tumbulgum on Saturday night.
Shani Lauf was the first to get her name in the book after slotting in a goal from a cross by Jenna Gollan.
The Flames then piled on five goals two to Abigail Alidace, another spectacular long range effort from Sam Smith and one each to Sophie Towner and Gypsy Hechtl. Coach Crystal Gollan, while delighted, wasnt getting too carried away.
Weve still got a lot of work to do on our fitness and building combinations, but for a first up performance Im very happy with the girls effort, Gollan said.
The Flames will travel to Brisbane next week to take on South Brisbane United, who also won their opening match against Peninsular Power.
Suns to shine
This year the mens competition has been altered from an under 21 to an under 19 competition and has consequently been dubbed a youth development series.
Howard Stubbs has been named as coach and after 10 years as a staff coach with Football Far North Coast is more than familiar with the players. They are Craig Attewell, Thomas Boland, Joel Bradford, Jai Cinnamond, Matt Gordon, Broden Hirst, Rameesh Kassim, Michael Kolovos, Andrew Lundie, Tye McDonald, Daniel Morrow, Dylan Rippon, Joel Rudgley, Tom Ruhl, Shane Sommerfield, Mario Tinning, Kyle Townsend, Murray Wade, Ashton Hicks and Jack Williamson. Most of these young guns regularly played Football Far North Coast Premier League this year so they should be highly competitive.
They commence their season this Saturday, October 28, at Burleigh Heads Soccer Club where they will face the Gold Coast at 1pm.
