Locals shine on the longboards
Around 150 competitors and several hundred spectators enjoyed perfect summer-like weather during the three-day Evans Head Longboard Invitational last weekend. The half to one-metre waves were fanned by offshore winds for all but a few heats and provided plenty of scope for some high scoring rides by the talented fields assembled across all divisions.
Evans Heads Ruben Roxburgh and Sage Joske out surfed surfing legends Larry Blair and Nat Young (multiple world champion) on 1970s boards to tie for the innovative Honolua Retro Expression Session. They were forced to draw straws for the prize a brand new 66 Honolua Retro model board. Roxburgh won the prize.
However, Joske went on to win the Old Mal (pre-1967 boards) division and pick up the Best Hang 10 Award. It is his third major Old Mal title for the year.
Lennox Head based Isabelle Braly took out the open womens from Banora Points Kirsty Webster. In the Under 18 boys, Byron Bays Tim Compton was successful over a strong field including runner-up Bryce Young and third place getter Cameron Scholten from Pearces Creek.
Other notable highlights included Coffs Harbours Jarred Neal taking out both of the premier divisions, the Bic Surf open and the open nine-foot. His speed and sweeping figure eight cutbacks also saw him given the Best Manoeuvre Award.
