Ear cut off in Tomahawk attack

A 46-year-old Ballina man had the top of his ear cut off in an alleged road rage incident involving a tomahawk on Angels Beach Drive on Monday at 8.50am.

A 42-year-old Ballina man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. He was denied bail and remanded in custody to appear in Lismore Local Court on December 5.

Crime manager Detective Inspector Steve Clarke said there was a history between the two men. He said a portion of the victims ear was found at the scene and he also received nasty head injuries. The man was taken to Ballina Hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.

Police allege the road rage incident escalated into a physical confrontation with the 42-year-old allegedly striking the victims head with a tomahawk before fleeing the scene in a blue Suzuki 4WD.

He said the victim raised the alarm and police were directed to the mans residence in Lakeview Circuit where they arrested him and seized exhibits a short time later. Local residents also called police after hearing the commotion.

A tomahawk is a very deadly weapon, said Detective Inspector Clarke. Used in the wrong hands or in the wrong fashion it could be very deadly.
