Birth centre fundraiser a dream come true

Alstonville nurseryman Oliver Tuck unlocked a secret yearning to be a dance party promoter while taking part in a Success Team program.

Now hes hosting his first gig, Equanimity, this Friday night at the Durrrumbul Hall where there will be great music and dancing with gypsy funksters Stipsky, the soulful harmonies of Scarlett Affection, acoustic soul and R&B by Tess Latu, and contemporary folk by Matty Mudcrab Devitt. Then theres DJs Tone Broker, Solid, Fab and Hypalync.

The night is a fundraiser for the Natural Birth Education and Research Centre, which was founded by Olivers mother Margaret Spain (Santo). Its a family-friendly gig and kids are free.

Oliver said he chose the gig as his goal for the Success Team and then fine tuned the idea with the help of other team members.

Success Team facilitator Molly Havyatt said the group wasnt about success as society defined it, but the success of achieving your own personal goals.

Not many of us live according to our real desires, said Molly. Were caught up in the material world. If making money makes your heart sing, then thats a goal in and of itself. But if its a means to an end then there might be other ways of getting there.

Molly said the other part of the program was learning concrete skills to work towards a goal and being part of a team for each other.

Isolation is a dream killer, she said. So you become a supportive network for each other. Theres one universal truth about success nobody gets there on their own.

Oliver said he had always wanted to run dance parties, so the fundraiser was a good step towards his goal.

Ive worked for the Blues Fest for three years running and Ive worked at nightclubs he said. But this is the first time Ive been the main person organising everybody.

Equanimity is at Durrumbul Hall this Friday, September 29, from 7.30pm until late. The cost is $15, kids are free and refreshments will be available.
