Old stars still shining

Italo Stars donned their original 1986 shirts for their 20-year reunion recently. Pictured are (rear l-r) John Newton, Ken Maslen, Sandy McPherson, John Essex, Paul Lascance, Kevin Wilson, Chris McPherson and Peter Fiore with (middle l-r) Peter Jensen, Gary Wilson, John Kay, Greg Sharpe and Glen Weir, and (front l-r) Stuart Harris, Mark Spencer, Peter Pascutto, Norm Snow, Tony Denny and Athol Parmenter.

1986 was a good year for Italo Stars premier division soccer side. So good that the team recently staged a 20-year reunion to celebrate their achievements and relive the glory days.

The side included many of the best players in the region over the following two decades and incredibly most of them are still playing, with one still competing in premier league John Newton for Lennox Head.

The Wilson brothers, Gary and Kevin, along with Stuart Harris, Glen Weir, Greg Sharpe and Peter Jensen are all still playing and/or coaching with Italo Stars. Tony Denny and Mark Spencer are still playing with Goonellabah and some, such as Peter Pascutto and Paul Lascance, are now referees.

In their prime the 86 side won the Anzac Cup, the minor premiership in the Northern Regional League, the State Amateur Cup and the NRTV Coffs Harbour Challenge.
