Breakaways burst into the big one

Breakaways goal keeper Talia Smith looks to pass during her teams 55-18 drubbing of Rous 1 in the Lismore Netball premier division preliminary final on Saturday.

A sound thrashing of Rous 1 has given Breakaways a timely boost in the lead-up to this Saturdays Lismore Netball premier division grand final.

The youthful Breakaways thumped the Rous veterans 55-18 in last Saturdays preliminary final to secure a grand final berth against title favourites Daleys.

Daleys, unbeaten all year, will be looking to regain the major title they lost last year to sister club Daleys Tribes.

Five members of that victorious Tribes team are playing in this years Daleys combination, which also benefits from several long-term veterans.

Daleys acting coach Nikki Krause, while confident of success, says she is taking nothing for granted.

Breakaways are coming off a good win and they have great youthful exuberance, she said. We wont be underestimating them, but Daleys has a very strong line-up and we will be at full strength for the game.

Our defenders Lucy Burke and Lisa Brown are capable of handling any attack in the competition, and Haley McAnnelly is very strong in the centre court.

Breakaways coach Tracey Robinson concedes her opponents are a very strong side.

But never say never, she said. We played consistently against Rous and this has given the team confidence in their own abilities. Most of our players are young and we are working on a longer-term strategy, but if they concentrate on doing their jobs as players rather than thinking about who their opposition are, then anything is possible.

Grand finals will be played across all senior, intermediate and junior divisions from 10am on Saturday at the Ballina Street courts, weather permitting. The division one grand final starts at 2.15pm.
