A little reading helps literacy

Last Friday more than 214 children from Casino Public School descended on the Casino Library to hear deputy manager, Sylvia Parisotto (pictured), read Andrew Daddos book Good night, me as part of National Simultaneous Storytime.

More than a quarter of a million children across Australia joined the event, which is held during Literacy and Numeracy Week to promote the value of reading and literacy, and the important role of libraries.

Syliva, appropriately dressed in fleecy pink pyjamas for the event, is on a mission to convince parents about the benefits of the library and early reading as a tool to improve a childrens literacy.

Its the best free thing in town, said Sylvia of the library. The whole idea is to get the children here into the library so they can think library and realise that reading is fun. Also, the library is not just about books. There is educational software, talking books and its all free.

Sylvia said much-loved Australian childrens author Mem Fox was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying that reading to your child for just 10 minutes a day could eliminate Australias literacy problems, and there is certainly strong evidence that reading to children from birth instills a love of reading.

Ten minutes is not a lot of time, said Sylvia, but sadly I think that many parents dont think they have the time to read to their children, let alone go to the library. That is something we gradually hope to change.
