Lismore Garden Club News

Do you, like me, get a little tired of going into your favourite nurseries and seeing the same types of mass produced garden plants time after time? I have listed a few of the plants that are not so common, that I have trialled over the last few years, that are not too hard to grow and are suited to our climate. You may want to try one or two yourself.

Creepers

Tecomanthe dendrophyla: This is an outstanding creeper which is grown for its showy clusters of large, deep pink, funnel shaped flowers.

Tecomanthe hilli (Fraser Island creeper): A slightly less spectacular creeper than T. Dendrophyla with pink flowers, but well worth growing. Needs some overhead shade.

Ipomoea Horsfalliae (Cardinal Creeper): A twining creeper with glossy foliage and large clusters of deep pink, waxy flowers. Grow in a sunny location.

Shrubs:

Luculia Grandiflora: An outstanding large shrub/small tree with large, deep green leaves and very fragrant snow white flowers.

Luculia Gratissima: A large shrub similar to L. Grandiflora but with rosy pink flowers.

Trees:

Plumaria Obtusa (Singapore white evergreen frangipani): A particularly attractive white, fragrant frangipani cultivar. Full sun.

Plumaria Obtusa (Darwin Pink evergreen frangipani): A compact dwarf frangipani cultivar with slender pale pink flowers. Full sun.

Remember, the annual Lismore and District Garden Competition is the biggest and best horticultural event on our local calendar. Gardens are judged on September 3 and 4 and are open for inspection from September 9-12.

Finally: Walk in your garden every day and immerse yourself in this magic that is called springtime.

Happy gardening
