Something to crow about

After 58 years of breeding brown leghorn fowls, Richmond Hills Vic Essery (pictured) has finally cracked the jackpot with his show birds winning two awards at the annual Australian Leghorn Breeders Association Show.

Vic won the best Australian brown leghorn pullet and also the Reserve Leghorn Champion with one of his cockrells.

He was over the moon he was that excited he brought the awards into work to show me, said Tony Maslen, a close friend and fellow brown leghorn breeder who got his first chook from Vic. Its a prestigious show and the first time hes won an award at that show, so it was a great achievement. It was the happiest Ive seen him in a while.

Vic will be showing and selling some of his leghorns at the North Coast A&I Society Lismore Poultry Clubs fundraising Purebred Poultry Auction next Sunday, September 10, at the Lismore Showgrounds.

The auction will include large and bantam fowls, ducks, turkeys and a few pheasants. While the auction caters for the serious breeder, families thinking about raising a few chooks in the backyard will also find cheap birds to take home.

Viewing begins next Sunday at 8.30am and the auction itself starts at 10am.

For information and catalogues phone Tony Maslen on 6663 1236 (after hours).
