Thistles fire up at last

The flag stayed down and Thistles posted a critical 1-nil win over Workers at Thistles Park on Sunday. Although the goal was questionable, the final result was more than fair as the blue machine ran rough shod over their more vaunted opponents in the second half. The win adds spice to the desperate relegation battle between Ballina and Thistles with Thistles drawing level on points with the seasiders. That said, Ballina have a much better goal average and Thistles will need to post another upset to avoid the fall.

In a tight round which produced three draws, Byron did enough to end Macleans hopes of sneaking past them to take the minor premiership, posting a 2-1 win. This now gives Byron a stranglehold on the minor title.

In fact this weekends round did a lot to settle the look of the final five with Byron, Maclean, Rovers and Lennox Head almost certain to take the top four spots. Now only the fifth and last place in the finals remains unclaimed. At present Italo Stars look like taking it by default. Not so much because of their own endeavours (they could only manage a draw against lowly Casino) but because the teams just below them arent faring any better. This situation is likely to continue with Workers, Goonellabah and Stars facing top competition high fliers over the next few weeks.
