Lismore Heights PS travels back in time

Lismore Heights Public School Kindergarten students Connor Whitehall and Kiarra Parmenter with (l-r) principal Ken Hickling, original kindergarten student Karen Day (nee Parkes) and reunion committee member Amanda Drew.

Lismore Heights Public Schools new principal Ken Hickling has joined the school just in time to unlock one of its best kept secrets whats inside the time capsule that was sealed in 1956.

On September 9 Ken will crack open the time capsule during the schools 50th birthday celebrations, and will help create a new one for another generation of students half a century down the track.

I feel really honoured to be given this special privilege. You can learn a lot by looking back at history and were hoping the time capsule gives us a glimpse of what life was like at the school 50 years ago, Ken said. I think it will transport some of the original students back in time to their old school days. Its going to be a nostalgic and magical event for a lot of people.

Original kindergarten student Karen Day (nee Parkes) says her favourite memory of school was gulping down her daily ration of chocolate milk at recess. Her second is the fun times in the playground, which she looks forward to reliving come September 9.

I have such good memories of my time at Lismore Heights and Im so looking forward to seeing all the old faces, Karen said. I am also putting together a book as a keepsake for ex-students, and Ive love to hear from anyone who has old photos, memorabilia or a memory to share.

The 50th birthday celebrations are open to the whole community from 11.30am on Saturday, September 9. Current students are putting on a big show called Carnivale and there will also be a mini ferris wheel, face painting, entertainment, a BBQ, ice cream van and much more. A special reunion will also be held at the Lismore Workers Club that evening.

For more information phone Amanda on 6624 7041. To book for the night-time reunion or to make a contribution to the 50th birthday book, phone Karen on 6622 8404 or 6629 3238.

Rosanna has designs on female taboo

Artist Rosanna Pimm uses 3500 porcelain tampons to created her large scale performance installation Riots of Passage in The Quad as part of The Lismore Women's Festival on International Women's Day. Laying down and de-constructing the mandala structure symbolises the impermanence of the menstrual cycle and an end to female inequality in the world.
