Well-known artist Jimmy Willing is curating a collaborative art project with local retailers to spice up the streets of Lismore in preparation for the Health and Herb Festival on August 19 and 20.
Called Dressing the Windows: The Shopfront Gallery, the project will see the artwork of more than 30 of the regions finest artists featured in shopfronts in the Lismore CBD and connecting arcades.
Jimmy says its designed to bring art to the people and give local residents a chance to admire some of the world-class art being produced right here in the Northern Rivers.
It takes art out of the walls of a gallery and into the street instead of it being divorced from the community its right there in everyday life, Jimmy said. The co-ordinator of this years Health and Herb Festival, Lisa Audus, has a lot of vision and is not frightened of trying new things, which is a breath of fresh air. Its good to experiment and we think people are going to love this project. The Herb Festival is a time for Lismore to party, and we wanted to bring some of that life and festive atmosphere into the CBD.The shop windows will feature everything from clay sculptures to oil paintings and even dark ages armour, which is normally used on the battlefields by local re-enactment groups.
The Shopfront Gallery project will be launched at Caddies Coffee Shop this Saturday, August 12, with a performance by the Perch Creek Family Jugband an all-singing, all-dancing family unit from the hills of Uki. The launch begins at 10.30am.
The Shopfront Gallery runs until Saturday, August 26.
