With spring just around the corner, now is the time to break out the fertiliser and apply it to flowers, vegies, shrubs and trees (even the natives). You could buy several different fertilisers for each group of plants, however, there is a much more simple solution use the same fertiliser on the whole lot. Blood and bone is not only suitable for every plant in your garden, including natives, but it is also an organic fertiliser.
The Lismore Garden Club has a very hectic list of events on the calendar. There is the morning tea in the beautiful garden of Grace and Les Hicks at Goonellabah this Friday, August 11, at 9am. Visitors are most welcome. Bring a plate of eats.
Then there is the City of Lismore and District 2006 Spring Garden Competition. Gardens will be judged from September 9-12. Its not too late to enter and there are 28 different sections.
The club is also taking a coach trip to the Springtime on the Mountain garden festival at Mount Tamborine on October 1. The cost is $35. Seats are selling fast, so book now. Phone me on 6624 7422 or 0421 021 451.
Finally: Encourage children who spend hours in front of the television or computer to get out into the garden by helping them to grow herbs and vegetables they can tend and eat fresh from the garden. ABC Gardening Australia magazine.
