Mullum stays strong

Touch and go: Northern Stars Shae Harrison beats Mullums Katie Andrew to the ball by mere centimetres on Saturday at Hepburn Park.

Northern Star were forced to defend for most of the first half on Saturday at Hepburn Park thanks to Mullumbimbys high strikers Pauline East and Erin Schumacher. The two combined excellently for the Taipans first goal, setting up team-mate Shari Johnstons strike just before half time.

When Stars players linked and passed accurately they worried Mullumbimby but all too often they relinquished possession without a fight and gave their opposition room to move without confrontation. Mullumbimby went on to seal the match with Erin and Asha Schumacher scoring to give them a 3-nil victory.

Joint leader of the competition, Labrador, fielded a team missing six regular first graders, and it placed their minor premiership aspirations in doubt, as they could only force a 3-all draw against Glee.

Glees Leah Wykes and Katrina Boehm both found the back of the net early and Labrador had to scramble to get back in the game. They did this with a vengeance, firing in three to take the lead as their mid field finally clicked.

However Glee hadnt finished fighting, and when Cassie Douglas converted a penalty stroke in the last five minutes, Labradors expectations were dashed.

Mudgeeraba, who are third on the leader board, were determined to register a win against Ballina and scored a goal, the first of seven, in the 10th minute of the game when Sam Morris started the scoring spree. Ali Forbes, Kim Tuckwell (3), Bailey Smith and Bonnie Scott all scored for Mudgee in the rout.

Under the enormous pressure it was hardly surprising that Ballinas goal keeper had to leave the field early in the second half with a knee injury. Ashley Gibson took her place and produced some great saves in the one-sided showdown.

This Saturday at Hepburn Park Northern Star play Kingscliff at 2.55pm. Glee play Griffith at Hepburn at 12.50pm on Sunday, followed by Easts against Labrador at 2.15pm.

Ballina gets the bye.

Two players, one over 45 and one over 50, are needed to go to Taree on August 11. Anyone interested please contact Chris on 6629 5676 or Wendy on 6624 3625.
