WHEN Claudette McLeod saw an ad for the new Curves gym in Toowoomba and decided she wanted to lose a bit of weight, she had no idea she'd become the gym-junkie she is today.

"They were newly opened so I just decided to give it a go," Mrs McLeod, 76, said.

That was 10 years ago.

Curves Toowoomba South just celebrated its 10-year anniversary, but Mrs McLeod had her own reasons for celebrations - she's clocked up more than 2000 workouts.

"I lost that weight in the first month I was here," she said.

"It just makes me feel better."

In addition to trying to attend classes six days a week, Mrs McLeod who recently retired after 38 years of working for Blue Care, said she had always eaten a healthy diet and also played squash and spent time going for walks with her husband, who also likes to keep fit - but through running instead.

"I have to keep up with him," she said.

Mrs McLeod said she enjoyed doing her exercise at the women's-only gym.

"They're always nice when I come in and they're there to give you a hand and tell you to push harder if you're slacking off a bit and keep an eye on you," she said.

"It makes it interesting."

Mrs McLeod said she favoured the early morning classes and made many friendships throughout her journey.

"There's a feeling of belonging," she said.

"I'm definitely a morning person - you can fit more into your day when you come to class in the morning."

But it's not just the Curves Toowoomba South gym she works out in.

"When I go away on holidays I always make sure to get a pass to wherever I'm going so I can keep it up," she said.

Although she admitted that got hard when she travelled overseas instead of around Australia.

Mrs McLeod said she didn't have any plans to quit any time soon.

There are two Curves gyms located in Toowoomba - one on Ruthven St and one on Anzac Ave.
