Extra help for small schools
Whian Whian Public School principal, Bob Mitchell, has welcomed news that the NSW Government has committed to providing extra staffing resources to schools with 25 students or less.
Having a second staff member, such as a teachers aide or administrative staff member, means that two adults will be on duty at all times during school hours from next year.
Its definitely a good step in the right direction, Mr Mitchell said. Currently Im here by myself two days a week, and if anything happened to me on one of those days, the kids would just have to fend for themselves. Its safer for both the kids and myself to have an extra pair of eyes, and help with things like answering the phone while Im teaching.
Whian Whian Public School has 14 students, and has yet to be notified what type of extra staff member will be provided.
The announcement will benefit 143 of the states smallest schools, many of them in isolated locations. Other local public schools to benefits along with Whian Whian are Afterlee, Collins Creek, Doubtful Creek, Grevillia, Manifold and Wiangaree.
