Local fighters earn national selection

Miyagi Kan Karate Club fighters (l-r) Lisa Quinn, Tahnee Hanson and Lauren Morgan took out gold in the female cadet team kumite (fight) division at the recent Australian Open.

Local karate exponents Tasman Wales, Matthew Tickle and Lauren Morgan have earned selection in the Australian Karate Team Squad after securing medals at the Australian Open recently. The three young fighters, who are part of the Miyagi Kan Karate Club in Lismore, managed to take out gold and silver in the kumite (or fighting) component of the tournament.

The Australian Open is the largest tournament held in the country and attracts participants from all over the globe. This is the third time the Miyagi Kan club has sent a team and once again they have been wildly successful, bringing home four gold, four silver and five bronze medals across a broad range of ages.

Miyagi Kan is one of the most successful country based clubs and is always keen to expand its membership. Anyone interested in this martial art can phone head coach Dean Marshall on 6622 1754 or 0422 559 484.
