Lismore Garden Club News

All the popular types of camellias are in flower this month. In fact camellias of various types are in flower from autumn right through to spring. That makes them well worth having in our home gardens. And while theyre in flower is the best time to make your choice of the ones youd prefer.

Camellias prefer part shade, but some will grow quite well in full sun. Be guided by your nursery worker. Camellias will also thrive in acid soil. Japonica camellias have dense foliage and lots of really lovely flowers. Sasanqua camellias are the first ones to flower each season, they are fast growing and make excellent hedges. Reticulata camellias are fairly open shrubs with sparse foliage and very large flowers. There are also small growing camellias which are right at home in pots. Standard camellias in the home garden are quite a stunning sight to behold. And some of the newer varieties even have a nice fragrance, which makes them of added value for inclusion in your garden.

The Lismore Garden Club social outing for July is a Christmas in July dinner at the Summerland House With No Steps in Alstonville on Tuesday, July 11. Cost is $25 per person. Any keen gardeners can attend you dont have to be a Lismore Garden Club member. If you wish to go and havent already put your name down on the list phone me on 6624 7422 or 0421 021 451. You can be sure of a really nice outing with the best of company.

Finally: Every new day in the garden brings fresh delights and lovely surprises; the flower that fades and dies today is replaced by a dozen more beautiful tomorrow.

Happy gardening
