East high on jumping selection

Young high jumper Anthony East (pictured) is one of only three high jumpers selected by Athletics Australia to be part of the Under 17 Youth Development Squad.

Anthony will join the 22-member squad for two specialist coaching camps during the year, where the up and coming Olympians will receive the finest coaching and instruction the nation can provide.

We were a little surprised when we heard of Tonys selection as he only came sixth in the National All School Championship, but that was before he found a coach, said his mother Lois East. Hes being coached by Phil Newtown from the Lismore Athletics Club now and maybe thats what swayed their decision. I think they see him as raw talent.

Although not highly successful at the National All School Championships, Anthony did leap to gold at the last NSW Combined High School Championship.
