Strapping lad and foot strap undoes champion

Marathon kayaker Alan Townsend

Tony Curtis long domination of the Lismore Kayak Marathon came to an end on Sunday when he was pipped at the post by Daniel Jenkins after the gruelling 22.5km race took its toll on Tonys kayak. Tony looked set to take out the title when his foot strap broke late in the race and Daniel, a strapping young bloke from Bonville Creek Canoe Club, powered past him over the last 100 metres.

Over 100 paddlers took part in the Lismore marathon and the event continues to grow in numbers and prestige. Other locals to excel were Mark Yager, who won the Under 18 marathon over 22.5km, Rodney Rose who won the open 15km race, Philip Docmit who took out the young veterans 15km race, and Marion Brownlie, Barbara Davies and Bill Taylor, who all won their age groupings.
