Winter species coming on strong

Graeme Essery caught this long tail tuna on an eight weight fly rod whilst on holiday on the Sunshine Coast. The fight took almost 90 minutes.

In the last week there have been some nice catches of winter species like tailor, bream and blackfish. The tailor, which varied hugely in size, have been taking lures with the raider. Some very nice bream are coming from the breakwalls at Ballina and although the numbers are not huge many of the fish are worth the effort. As the weather gets cooler and after a few good westerly winds there should also be a pick up in the blackfish. Already there have been some nice ones taken and it will not be long before the catches get close to bag limits.

We mentioned last week the Evans Head Classic in July. Another date to put in the calendar is the Northern Rivers Bass Classic being held on October 7 and 8. It has been a few years since it has been held and already there is a lot of interest. This year there will be great prizes for this event.
