Macklin visits to talk Tech College

Shadow Education Minister Jenny Macklin will visit Ballina High School today (Thursday) to discuss the schools bid to run an Australian Technical College, which was recently rejected by the Howard Government.

Despite Ms Macklins claims the rejection was outrageous the school and its bid partner, the North Coast Institute of TAFE, have both resigned themselves to the fact they were unsuccessful.

Ballina High School principal, Ros Mayberry, said the school had not been involved in any further negotiations, while a North Coast Institute of TAFE spokesman said the bid had failed and thats where it stands.

But that hasnt deterred Ms Macklin.

The Lismore/Ballina Technical College has become the latest victim of the Howard Governments extreme industrial relations agenda, she said. The Howard Government is insisting the staff of Technical Colleges be offered Australian Workplace Agreements, even if they dont want them. Unlike the government, I am up here to listen to the local community and to support the local campaign to get the Technical College open.
