Beef Week celebrates 25 years

Gearing up for the 25th Casino Beef Week are (l-r) volunteer Brenda Armfield, original committee member and volunteer Iris Cruickshank and last years Miss Casino Beef Week Casey Saunders. The colourful cows were created by David Blackman and Barry Moran for Casino Public Schools window display at the Commercial Hotel.

When Iris Cruickshank saw cattle walking down the main street of Casino at the first ever Beef Week, she remembers thinking, Thats so good it will last 20 years.

And Iris was right the festival was a huge hit with locals and has drawn a crowd of thousands ever since, putting Casino on the map as the beef capital of Australia and boosting the towns profile and economy.

Beef Week coordinator Sue Serone paid tribute to volunteers like Iris, who has been volunteering since day one, saying it was their dedication and spirit that has helped Beef Week reach it

Beef Week wouldnt have survived all these years without the volunteers, sponsors, businesses and the community, Sue said. This year is a real milestone for us and its going to be the best festival ever.

Beef Week kicks off next Monday, May 22, beginning with the staff and window dress up competitions, a fashion expo on Tuesday and the crowning of Miss Casino Beef Week on Wednesday.

Next Friday, May 26, events for the general public begin in earnest. Enjoy a hearty meal at the Casino Beef Week Breakfast in the CBD from 6am, before watching the famous Cow Pat Lotto and milking competition. You can also try your luck at the Beef Week Cup race meeting at the Casino Showground from 12pm.

Saturday, May 27, features wall-to-wall entertainment from 9am-1pm in downtown Casino, including the Fun and Food Fest, a car and bike show, woodchop and whip cracking comps. The big float parade through town will be held at 1.45pm, before the Mr Beef Week judging at the Casino RSM at 4pm and a rodeo at the showground from 5pm.

Sue is particularly excited about the Family Fun Day on Sunday, May 28, when Australias best known vet, Dr Harry Cooper, will be on hand to answer questions from kids about their pets. Theres also market stalls and kids activities, national cattle dog trials and much more.
