The stink of biff

The biff was back on Saturday when Lismore City played the Gold Rats.

Lismore City dominated the rucks and brawls on Saturday at Crozier Oval, winning the abbreviated game against Southern Cross University Gold Rats 19-8 after referee Joe Claes was forced to call off the fierce encounter four minutes early.

All-in brawls erupted a number of times during the game and eventually the lonely figure of Claes, who had no official touch judges to help him quell the riot, was left with the choice of either sending everyone off or just ending the game. He chose the latter.

When the two sides actually played rugby, the open field kicking of Steve Hughes was exemplary, with the utility back regularly giving the green machine excellent field position. The City forwards made good use of this, scrummaging and rolling their mauls with precision.

Meanwhile, out on Lyle Park, the Pioneers scraped home 22-20 over last years premiers Ballina. The loss is the Seahorses third in a row and they now sit only one point clear of the lowly Baa Baas from Tweed. The Pioneers giant new South African lock Francois DeVilliers scored two run away tries to cap a Man-of-the-Match performance.

Yambas season in the sun continued on Saturday when they came back to knock off the Casino Bulls 22-14 in Yamba. Yamba have a bigger, taller and more mobile pack this year and this has opened up the field for their backs. The Buccaneers ran in four tries to capture the bonus point after being down 14-nil early in the first half.

Lennox Head look set for a long and lonely season on the bottom of the comp after copping a 38-8 drubbing at the hands of fellow cellar dwellers, the Tweed/Coollangatta Baa Baas.

This weekend Yamba should continue their merry ole sea-dog way when the Baa Baas mosey into town. The Pioneers will be laying plenty of traps and putting poison in the walls when the Gold Rats scurry to Wollongbar. Alas Lennox will suffer at the hands of the Redmen from Grafton and although they will probably make it out alive what will remain of their spirit is debatable. The remaining match is the battle of the beasts as the Bulls endeavour to out bash the men from Lismore. My money is on City in that bout. All the matches get underway at 5.10pm.
