Piano pop heaven

Is that Billy Joel? Coming to Ballina? With Elton John? Oh My God! Oh My God!

On Friday, April 28, the Ballina RSL presents Elton Joel as part of its Candlelight Dinner series. (You get a cabaret show and a fine meal.) Two famous piano men Todd Burns as the flamboyant Elton John and David Ferguson (pictured) as the Piano Man, Billy Joel are the stars of this exciting, upbeat cabaret show.

Todd Burns has played the piano since the age of five. After studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Todd performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Everyone in the family loved music, but my older brother was a huge Elton John fan, so from the time I was born, his music was already booming through our house, said Todd. In my show, youll see the energetic Elton John from years gone by, with lots of jumping around and even jumping off the piano.

Thousands of dollars worth of replica costumes are worn during the show, including Eltons famous head-to-toe pink PVC jumpsuit, the outrageous feathers of the seventies and the boater and tails he wore in the eighties.

Performing the music of Billy Joel is Todds friend of 15 years, David Ferguson, who began playing piano at the age of six.

His stature, looks, personality, voice and musicianship are so similar he could be Billy Joels twin brother.

Ferguson has performed his show in 14 countries and says that, today, playing Billy Joels music is just a way of life.

Billys songs are written by him, a piano player, for a piano player, and he knows what suits the hands of a pianist.

Both Todd as Elton and David as Joel begin the two-hour show together on stage, just as Elton and Joel did in their famous Face to Face tour, before each performing their own set. Both artists return to the stage for their dynamic duelling grand piano finale.

To reserve your table for the Elton Joel Candlelight Dinner Show phone 6686 2544. Tickets are $35 for the two-course dinner and entertainment.

Freebie: The Echo has a double pass to give away to some lucky person. To go in the draw to win phone 6622 2888 between 10.30 & 10.45am next Monday, April 24, and tell us who Elton Johns hit song Candle in the Wind was originally dedicated to. Hint: I said originally.
