REDBANK Plains residents were in shock yesterday following a horrific car accident in which a young girl was killed and three other children injured.

Police were trying to work out why a white Ford Falcon station wagon veered to the left side of a narrow section of Henty Dr, hitting a tree.

The single-vehicle crash was reported about 3.30pm, with neighbours and other bystanders rushing to the aid of the injured.

Witnesses said frantic attempts were made to save the life of a six-year-old girl, however she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other children were taken to hospital, at least one of them with serious injuries, while the male driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital.

Ipswich Inspector Merv Adamson said police believed the man had just picked the children up from school and that they were not far from home when the crash occurred.

"At this stage we have got no idea as to the cause," Insp Adamson said.

Emergency services blocked off a section of Henty Dr while officers from the Forensic Crash Unit commenced investigations.
