Mercy-ful Redmen slash students

Rugby League convert Ray Mercy touched down three times for the Grafton Redmen on Saturday as last years finalists got the better of Southern Cross University 29-17. The Gold Rats rattled up a half century against Coolangatta last week and went into the the match high on confidence, only to limp into half time down 26-3. The students put in a solid second half but were never in the chase. Last year the Redmens scrum was the most formidable in the competition and with quicksilver Ray Mercy now at inside centre the Grafton machine could go all the way.

After a fighting loss to the Pioneers last week Lennox Head got a real taste of Far North Coast first grade when they were spanked by the premiers Ballina Seahorses 48-7 at Quay Reserve on Saturday. The Seahorses turned on seven tries during the lopsided encounter as prop forward Brent Horan crossed for two and earned himself three points in the Player of the Year competition.

The Wollongbar/Alstonville Pioneers ground out another determined victory 22-10 over Yamba despite a man-of-the-match performance by Yamba backrower Mitch McLennan. The win is the Pioneers second tight win in succession and it says plenty for their defence.

In the only other match of the round Casino continued Coolangattas baptism of fire, knocking over the Baa Baas 26-19.
