Stormwater charge under a cloud

Lismore ratepayers and businesses could be charged $25 for stormwater management if a vote at Councils Tuesday meeting is anything to go by.

Council voted 7/4 (Crs Mieneke, Hampton, Graham and Swientek against) in favour of the Stormwater Management Services charge, however, Crs Swientek, Chant and Graham have since lodged a rescission motion to try and head off the move.

A change to the Local Government Act last year allows councils to impose the extra charge for planning, construction and maintenance of drainage systems, stormwater treatment, harvesting and re-use projects.

Council staff were aiming to introduce the charge in the coming financial year, which will raise around $320,000 annually for stormwater projects.

The issue will be debated again at Councils May meeting.
