Rain welcomes flood conference to town

Lismore mayor Merv King (left) and Councils events organiser John Bancroft welcome well-known personality Dr Karl Kruszelnicki to Lismore for the 46th annual Flood Plain Management Authorities Conference earlier this week.

Science guru Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and ABC TV weatherman Mike Bailey were just two of the high profile speakers who visited Lismore for the 46th annual Flood Plain Management Authorities Conference this week.

Around 300 delegates from around NSW gathered in Lismore for the three-day conference, which included a series of flood related workshops, speeches by flood experts and a tour of Lismores new flood levee.

And not even this weeks heavy rain could dampen the spirits of the Flood Plain Management Authorities chairman, Allan Ezzy, who said this years conference was one of the best he had ever attended.

We heard a very inspiring talk by Larry Larson from the US Committee on Climate Change and Sea Level Rise who spoke about the devastation in the southern states after hurricanes Rita and Katrina, Mr Ezzy said. The message is all about planning and in flood prone ares like Lismore people have to be prepared for the worst and take heed of the emergency services personnel if they call for an area to be evacuated.
